Leprechaun Catering - Kumquats, Lychees - EHSE 001 (LP)

"Kumquats, Lychees" finds Leprechaun Catering, Baltimore's best beloved brunette duo of tobacco smoking Tom Boram and Jason Willett, on their first ever release, making a sound described by some as "techno you can't dance to, or free improvisation you can dance to."  this tag is misleading, however.  Perhaps the listener could better imagine the LC sound if they conduct this simple exercise.  Imagine if H.R. Pufnstuf and Witchiepoo were at a rave and both fully disembodied in a bottomless k-hole, and were then told that they had to arrange a dance version of Jesus Christ Superstar to be performed by an orchestra consisting of Duane Eddy, Ikue Mori, John Entwistle, Tina weymouth, Lux interior, Henry Kissinger, Victor Hugo, Gene Krupa, Eraserhead, Gary Coleman, Stewart Copeland, Clerence Clemmens,  Jimmy Nolan, Tony Blair, John Belushi, Jimmy Guiffre, Keith Emerson, and Animal from The Muppet Show.  The audience at this rave would consist of very fit senior citizens who would have the H.R./Witchiepoo Orchestra performance tuned to their hearing aids.  The refreshment table would serve only prune sorbet and hot house rhubarb tuna salad hoagies.  The rave would be in a wind tunnel.  There would also be a skateboarding halfpipe demonstration done by zombies.

Blaster Al Ackerman - I Am Drunk - EHSE 002 (LP)

This listener's prediction:  the muffled voice of Blaster Al Ackerman reading his "Pepper Young" translations with a presumed bar of soap in his mouth followed by tree frog belches will replace the sound of a passing steam locomotive as the poetic sounds of indescribable mystery and high lonesomeness.  This audio icon of the 21st Century can be found on Ehse Records' LP release of Blaster Al Ackerman's "I Am Drunk".  And indeed at times he does sound drunk, but not just on booze, also on language and human absurdity.  Featuring live as well as "studio" recordings, "I Am Drunk" also has two Blaster classics that raise the humdrum world of the workplace to the giddy heights of Philip K. Dick in Munchkinland - "The John Eaton Recommendations" and "The Crab".   Another prediction:  copies of this album with its linguistic hijinks and squat and thrusts will be played far more times and enjoyed much more than any mothball enshrined Caedmon LP of T.S. Eliot or Robert Frost intoning.

Little Howlin' Wolf - Brave Nu World- EHSE 003 (LP)

After 18 years James Pobeiga aka Little Howlin Wolf, Shadow Drifter, Buccaneer Bob, Deacon Blue, etc...returns with his next LP, "BRAVE NU WORLD."  The music on his previous self-released LPs is a burnt, lugubrious soulblues, overdubbed and overdubbed, Wolf on every instrument, mixed with downhome caveman indiscrestion and up-above-it self-approval of each weird intuitive leap.  Blasted, purposefully underground, and adamnantly original, Wolf's style results in some seriously messed-up records. And now comes what is hands down his most challenged work to date! An instant damaged visionary outsider classic recorded by Twig Harper in his West Baltimore Diamond Eyes studio in killer LHW style: flowing over dubbed/bounced 4-track.  This one is even more fried with even more pyramids of guesswork, crooning and growling, and stomping and blurting sorrows and rages than his previous recordings.

Cover design by Carly Ptak.  Front and back covers all individually hand silk screened by Twig Harper.

Trockeneis - 5025 AD- EHSE 004 (LP)

From the den of pre-scientific iniquity in which Baltimore sound actors thrive on non-planning, the stately emergence of professional harsh acousticians in five-part harmony, a brash romp through the New Frictionalism, The New Spectralism, and The New Ritualism. Bowing. Rubbing. Scraping. Squealing. Squeaking. Screeching. Moaning. Silence. Anything else. Nothing else. Sound fixations waiting to unfix in the act of observation/measurement. Go ahead, measure them. Then flip to side B and watch your numbers float away in a muddy stream of ink. All sounds were made without electricity. It's portable music. You can easily move from now to the time when there was no emotion, just its precursors of permanently lingering urgency. Paul Neidhardt, Catherine Pancake, Dan Breen, and Andy Hayleck caress their idiophones until they're lost in backporch lullabies of terror. Audrey Chen's voice also gets lost, swallowed by its mechanical half-kin and trapped into the shadow world of forbidden overtones. In the center we find a steaming hunk of dry ice, hosting the sounds of molecular frenzy at the interface of hot and cold. Metal. Wood. H2O. Larynx. Danger. Safety. They say it's built into the limbic system.

Harrius - Enter the Cotton Ring - EHSE 005 (LP)

This brand new epic by Jenny Gräf Sheppard (of Metalux) and Chiara Giovando sits quietly for its real audience in the ages. Both an alarmingly intense and hushed "noise" record and totally whacked "songwriter" record, if it needed a catagory, Enter the Cotton Ring is an exploratory mack truck of left-hemisphere-manifestation-in-time. Unlike the majority of vocal-noise hybrids bubbling up lately, Gräf and Giovando refence neither sound poetry, nor metal (for the dudes) or jazz balladry (for the ladies) but instead a novel hybrid of dream-incantation, lieder and effects that electronics might achieve but how? An unsettling mix of vocal wrenching and melifluousness, effected guitar twang fuckery and intuitive anti-system electronics, it'll send you on a rapid shuttle-ferrey on the space-time straits compells you to keeping chewing slowly. No CD issue or promotional tour on the horizon, just a psychedelic Western recently shot in the Badlands (no joke) for this will be part-soundtrack. Grab while you can. Twelve stars.

Andy Hayleck - Two Gong/Wire Pieces - EHSE 006 (LP)

Baltimore-based sound artist Andy Hayleck has worked primarily with field recordings and bowed metal over the past seven years in improvised settings, installation and solo composed works. His previous recordings include The Disappearing Floor (Recorded), a suite of edited field recordings and vibrating metal sounds; Various Recordings Involving Ice (Fairfield/HereSee), a set of field recordings of crystalized H2O; and his bowed saw and cymbal performances with fricative free music collaborative group Trockeneis (Ehse). Two Gong/Wire Pieces presents side-long live-to-tape performances using a special system which Hayleck has invented and with which he has performed widely - bowing a long wire attached to a Chinese gong, allowing for special control of the irrational vibrations of the metal plate through careful control over the tension of the wire and place and style of bowing. The resulting masses of beating tone-forms are lakes of pools of eddies or whirlpools born from a deceptively simple and carefully considered system and a seemingly enormous pair of ears.

Beaver - You Can Only Control Instincts When They Come - EHSE 007 (LP)

Known simply around town as beaver, he now makes low-fi bedroom 4-track songs with his guitar and pieces of drum kit lying around his apartment. Occasionally he'll tamper with sounds on his mpc2000 and fruity loops. Live performances are epic, intimate, heart-warming and sincere.  Fruitfully involved in numerous side projects and collaborations, beaver has participated in everything from igloo to brain deer to singing in think about life and to going on tour with wolf parade and sunset rubdown. These projects are a means for him to keep himself entertained and involved with the friends that he truly loves and admires. accompanying his music, beaver's illustrations and drawings speak through manic landscapes and hybrid creatures. His images are often elated with eroticism and touches of fantasmal colours, lines, curves, and scribbles that suggest life and being. travelling between minimal, with floating bodies and vacant spaces, and the complex, with furrowed forms amassed into dense stuctures, his images teeters to extremes.

Snacks - Natural Snacks - EHSE 008 (10" picture disc)

For this record, Snacks initially wanted to encode an interactive website of sexy dance music videos and lathe it into vinyl. Included with the record would be an rca jack to telephone wire adapter so people could jam the album using their old 56k modems.  The board of directors at ehse records unfortunately 86ed this concept leaving Snacks to do a picture disc containing analog gastronomy, fights between the wait staff and the cooks, effluvial drum licks, persuasive percussion, tasteful guitar solos, non-ironic tap dancing, hot body squelches, vintage garbage, french primitivism, nocturnal grooves carved in avocado rinds, troublesome themes, slavic melancholy, uptight programming, neoist sequencers, ham-fisted mastering, laconic bass playing, pregnant lady booty tracks. Picture window hand screened jacket around picture of pure record picture disc record.

Ian Nagoski- Kerflooey - EHSE 009 (LP)

two side-long excerpts from a 58-minute home-recorded performance, made in 2003 for Ben Green's "one hour as..." radio show on Resonance 103.3 FM, London. That performance turns out to have been a summary of the electronic music I made at home on four-track cassette and CDR from digital feedback circuits and the vibrating metal plate instrument invented by Dan Conrad, the Wild Wave, between 1998 and 2003. The source material for Kerflooey is comprised mostly of reworked sounds that turned up in other forms on my three previous finished records. Those solo releases are now basically unavailable, so Kerflooey works as another dose or a summary of that work - densely layered polydrones that try, through sensual immersion and pulsing, to manifest feelings, let them take their course, reveal them as lenses of time-perception and focus the lenses as close to the heart of the matter as I could. Since recording this, I became an improvising vocalist, an anthologist of early recordings, record shop co-owner and father.
